The Story Behind the Piece
Sentinels of Baker Park was inspired by a winter walk through Baker Park—one of my favourite green spaces in Calgary.
It’s a place I’ve returned to many times, but in winter, it changes. The landscape becomes quieter, more restrained. The trees feel taller, more defined. The space between them more noticeable.
What stood out to me was that balance.
The trees stand firm—structured, steady, almost watchful. Around them, the snow softens everything, settling into the ground with a kind of quiet ease. I leaned into that contrast while painting.
The surface was built up more deliberately here, giving the snow a sense of presence— something shaped rather than simply laid down. It adds weight to the stillness, without disturbing it.
It’s a familiar place, but seen through a quieter lens.
